Houston has no "zoning ordinances". The only thing that controls the neighborhoods are deed restrictions. Once the deed restrictions of a neighborhood expire, the neighborhood is fair game for businesses to move in. I live in an old neighborhood and the deed restrictions long ago expired. The good news is, the companies that have chosen to move into this neighborhood are wholesale floral supply companies and landscaping companies. I'm sitting here on this, My Birthday, and I hear something outside that sounds like a freight train might be coming close to my home. I open the front door, walk out into the yard in the dark and cold, and it's an 18-wheeler attempting to turn on the street that runs down the side of my house. There's a guy driving the truck and another guy standing in the middle of the street giving instructions. The street is narrow, not meant to carry 18-wheelers, so help is needed. The guy giving instructions sees me and says "sorry we woke you". "You didn't wake me, but it's a bit scary to be sitting at your computer and hearing what sounds like a freight train coming toward your house." We both laugh. I go back in the house, several minutes pass, then, a knock on the door, I open the door and there standing on my porch, in the cold and dark, is the truck guy holding a huge bouquet of flowers. He says "I thought it was the least we could do for disturbing you this early in the morning." I say "I thought you were bringing them to wish me a Happy Birthday!" He says "It's your Birthday today?" "Yep, it is." The truck nut stands on my front porch and sings Happy Birthday at the top of his lungs! Ahh, the strangeness of living in Houston!!! But, a great way to start the day, flowers and a voice raised in song! I hope your day begins with flowers and voices singing! That would be a great Birthday gift to me! P. S. In case you haven't figured it out, the 18-wheeler was making a delivery to one of the wholesale floral companies down the street! Those 18-wheelers are welcome on my street anytime they are bringing flowers!!! And, dropping some off on my doorstep is ok too, even at 5:00 am.
