After reading my sister's blog www.from-rufus.com, all kinds of things popped for me! I attended one of the meetings she's talking about with her once! Looking around the table and understanding what my sister has been through all the years that she has attended those meeting ALONE, I felt the intimidation and more then a little shameful that I hadn't availed myself to attending those meeting with her in the past, she certainly could have used an advocate. I have rarely felt that intimidated and silently, in my own head, was outraged at the thought that here we were, my sister, her son and myself, being outnumbered, threatened, intimidated and being told what they felt was best for her son by people that are paid with OUR TAX DOLLARS!!!!! The feeling was that they were there to do what was best for the school district, not what was necessarily best for my nephew. I felt compelled to take that intimidation on, and as is so often the way I deal with things, my mouth would not stay shut! My sister will probably never ask me to go to one of those meetings with her again. I came away with a new respect and admiration for my sister that day, and a new understanding of the very difficult road she had and still is walking. I salute you Rufus, I couldn't have gone through all you have gone through with the Grace you have displayed. Being my authentic self, I would have bombed the building years ago!
While thinking about all of that, the realizations started coming fast and furious, mostly having to do with rules and boundaries. It's terrible to be in a position of others telling you what the rules and boundaries are about the most important thing to any mother, her child! Feeling compromised on that level is more painful and fear inducing then I have the words to explain. It also popped up that agreeing to live by what some else tells you the rules and boundaries have to be in order to accommodate their fears, is fear inducing in it's self! It's feels wrong, it leaves you with a feeling of being less than authentic and in a place of questioning your own integrity!
When you have been through a time in your life when you have totally lost touch with all the rules and boundaries that have made your life work for you your entire life, it's a long process to re-establish your own rules and boundaries in your mind and, the hardest part of all, to then begin again to live by them! What attending that meeting with my sister did, and the memory her blog brought up again for me is, Fear. Fear is what causes each and everyone of us to not live by the rules and boundaries that we know are right and good for us. The fear of losing something, the fear of not looking good, the fear of making someone angry! The dictionary defines fear as:
fear: –noun
1. a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid.
2. a specific instance of or propensity for such a feeling: an abnormal fear of heights.
3. concern or anxiety; solicitude: a fear for someone's safety.
4.reverential awe, esp. toward God.
5.that which causes a feeling of being afraid; that of which a person is afraid: Cancer is a common fear. –verb (used with object)
6.to regard with fear; be afraid of.
I've lived most of my life being totally fearless! Believing I could handle anything that came my way. Right up until the time that I became fearful of everything, my own actions, the actions of others, the phone or doorbell ringing, fear of what I was going to say, or what others might say.
What I've learned today, living by your OWN rules and boundaries is what creates fearlessness. I read something a while back, written by someone else about what they have learned, I've deleted the ones I don't feel I've learned (I probably need to work on the ones I've deleted in order to learn them) and I've added my comments to the ones I have learned about what else I have learned. Here it is:
I've Learned
I'VE LEARNED that you cannot make someone love you or act a certain way to prove it to you. All you can do is be someone who is loving and can be loved. The rest is up to them. (How can anyone love you if you aren't being who you really are? Being true to your own rules and boundaries is the only way to be who you truly are!)
I'VE LEARNED that no matter how much I care, some people just don't care back.
I'VE LEARNED that it's not what you have in your life, but who you have in your life that counts.
I'VE LEARNED that you can get by on charm for about 15 minutes. After that, you'd better know something important and useful. (During my dark days, someone said to me "You are the most charming and endearing liar I've ever known! How's that for a compliment? Thanks DCM for holding my mouth accountable and for thinking I'm charming and endearing!)
I'VE LEARNED that you shouldn't compare yourself to the best others can do, but to the best you can do. (I've learned that doing your best is sometimes intimidating to others, but that's no reason not to do your best, their feelings of intimidation are about their baggage.)
I'VE LEARNED that it's not what happens to people that's important. It's what they do about it that matters.
I'VE LEARNED that you can do something in an instant that will give you a heartache for life.
I'VE LEARNED that no matter how thin you slice it, there are always two sides. (I've learned that some people aren't interested in both sides, they only want to hear the side that suits their own needs.)
I'VE LEARNED that it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be and who God made me to be, and that those are the same things.
I'VE LEARNED that it's a lot easier to react than it is to think carefully.
I'VE LEARNED that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.
I'VE LEARNED that you can keep going long, l o n g , L O O O O O O N G after you think you can't.
I'VE LEARNED that we are responsible for what we think, do, and say, no matter how we feel.
I'VE LEARNED that either you control your attitude or it controls your whole life.
I'VE LEARNED that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades and there had better be something else more meaningful to take its place.
I'VE LEARNED that heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of their fear or any possible consequences. (I've learned that some people have a distorted view of what a "hero" is! I've learned that you don't become a hero by doing for others what they can do for theirself. I've learned that doing for others what they can do theirselves is co-dependency, not helping, it's about thinking they are more important and have more value then you do, and you are, therefore willing to do what they can be do theirselves. I've learned that no one really values work you do for free or money you give away, they just think you have no life, need something to do, want to be liked, and are therefore willing to pay to be liked or avoid boredom by spending your money or by giving your time away. I've learned that there are those that will always take what you are willing to give but that when you have nothing left to give, they will be angry and probably, gone.)
I'VE LEARNED that there are people who love you dearly, but just don't know how to show it in ways that are meaningful or preferable to you. (I've learned that I've been loved by many, I've been shown that love in the best way they knew how to show their love, I just wasn't any good at receiving it! I'm working on being better at receiving, to bad I didn't get that message for myself with that Valentine Basket episode!)
I'VE LEARNED that my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time.
I'VE LEARNED that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down may be the ones to help you get back up.
I'VE LEARNED that sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, to feel and express my anger, but that never gives me the right to be cruel and harsh.
I'VE LEARNED that true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance and the longest time. Same goes for true love.
I'VE LEARNED that just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.
I'VE LEARNED that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated or how much you've accomplished or accumulated.
I'VE LEARNED that your family won't always be there for you. It may seem funny, but people you aren't related to can take care of you and love you and teach you to trust people again. Families aren't always biological. (Thanks Coco!)
I'VE LEARNED that it's possible to feel a stronger "family" connection to a step-sibling then to your biological siblings.
I'VE LEARNED that it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself. (I've learned that forgiveness of yourself is sometimes much harder then getting forgiveness from others.)
I'VE LEARNED that no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn't stop for your grief. (I've learned that even when you stop your own world because of depression and grief, the rest of the world goes on, but you don't!)
I'VE LEARNED that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we ultimately become.
I'VE LEARNED that just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.
I'VE LEARNED that we show who we are by our actions.
I'VE LEARNED that we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.
I'VE LEARNED that you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever.
I'VE LEARNED that two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.
I'VE LEARNED that no matter how you try to protect your children, they will eventually get hurt, sometimes by you, and you will hurt a great deal in the process.
I'VE LEARNED that no matter the consequences, those who are honest with themselves, get further in life. (My point exactly!)
I'VE LEARNED that many things can be powered by the mind, the trick is first self-control, then self-surrender.
I'VE LEARNED that no matter how many friends you have, if you are their pillar, you will feel lonely and lost at the times you need them most.
I'VE LEARNED that your life can be changed in a matter of hours, by people who don't even know you. (I've learned that sometimes, when that happens, it's not really about You, it's about something going on with the person that doesn't even know you!)
I'VE LEARNED that even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help.
I'VE LEARNED that the paradigm we live in is not all that is offered to us. (Choose!)
I'VE LEARNED that credentials on the wall, adulation and the cheering of a crowd do not make you a decent human being.
I'VE LEARNED that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon.
I'VE LEARNED that although the word "love" can have many different meanings, it loses value when overly used.
I'VE LEARNED that it's hard to determine where to draw the line between being nice and not hurting people's feelings and standing up for what you believe.
I'VE LEARNED that no matter how fast or how far you go, you can't outrun God.
I'VE LEARNED that no matter how far away I've been, He'll always welcome me back. (I've learned that True Friends will always welcome you back also!)
I'VE LEARNED that love is not for me to keep, but to pass on to the next person I see.
I'VE LEARNED that even if you do the right thing for the wrong reason, it's still the wrong thing to do.
I'VE LEARNED what the saying "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions means." Good intentions aren't enough, good action is required.
I'VE LEARNED that WRITING, as well as talking can ease emotional pain!
And the best part of all . . . I AM STILL LEARNING
